Who was Eutychus in The Bible?

Eutychus in The Bible

God’s prophet Paul was once giving a sermon to a congregation. At that time, a young man was also listening to this sermon. This sermon was being delivered on a building on which the young man was sitting on the window of the third floor. Suddenly he fell asleep and fell down from the third floor and died on the spot. Paul miraculously resurrected the dead young man. This story is written in the New Testament.

Verse

“On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight.  There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting.  Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead.  Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “He’s alive!” Then he went upstairs again and broke bread and ate. After talking until daylight, he left.  The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.” (Acts 20:7-12)

Eutychus Revival

Eutychus Revival

A carelessness of Eutychus had thrown him into the pit of death, but Paul performed a miracle. Just as miracles were found in the stories of Elijah and Elisha, Paul did the same. Paul took the boy named Eutychus in his arms and brought him back to life by God’s command. This also made the people aware of Paul’s prophecy and people believed that Paul had also done the same way the previous prophets had raised the dead. Paul was close to God’s mercy and power.

Verse

Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “He’s alive!” (Acts 20:10)

Verse

Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him!” (1 Kings 17:21)

Verse

“Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm.” (2 Kings 4:34)

Significance of Falling

When Eutychus fell from the window, it was a sign that he was not listening carefully to the word of God. His intention was not there, which caused him to faint and fall down. It was not only physically but also spiritually that he had turned away from the mercy of God and was overcome by his own self, which led him to go into the dark well, but from there God’s mercy brought him towards light.

Verse

This is why it is said:

“Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” (Ephesians 5:14)

Importance of Fellowship

When he was speaking to a congregation, It was from morning to night. Therefore, because of Eutychus’ lack of interest, he fell asleep and fell. This shows that when the word of God is being preached, even if the time is long, it should be listened to with full attention. If we listen to God’s words carefully and with full attention, then we will receive advice and we will be able to follow the path given by God. It is very important in religion to discuss the message of God’s Messenger among many people and to make people understand this message.

Verse

“Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25)

Lesson From Eutychus

Lesson From Eutychus

When I was reading the story of Eutychus, many things came to my mind and I learned that God always gives ease to man after difficulty, even if it is his own fault. The second is that we should always listen to God’s words carefully because there is good in it. If we understand the word of God correctly then only we will know what God wants from us and only then we can live a good life. The lesson from the resurrection of Eutychus after death is for everyone: God’s mercy is for all kinds of people, whether he is good or bad. God always calls him to his mercy.

Verse

“My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” (Proverbs 3:21-24)

Role of preaching of Paul

When a prophet is giving a sermon to a congregation, his aim is that as many people as are present should listen carefully and tell the others. If the people present there will not listen carefully, then who will preach next?  Therefore, it is important that if a servant of God is conveying the message of God to the people, then the present people should listen to the words with full attention.

Verse

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:14-15)

Verse

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
