Judas Iscariot in The Bible

Do you know why Judas was buried in the Field of blood?

The chief priest forbade Judas to return the money he had received as a result of betraying Jesus and bought a piece of land which was named Akeldama. Those who are strangers will be buried in this land. Akeldama means Field of blood in the Aramaic language. Judas was buried in this land and all the other people who died due to evil and greed were buried in this cursed place. The field of blood is associated with the name of Judas and everyone looks at him very strangely.

Introduction

The disciples of Jesus brought it to completion, but there was one disciple who betrayed Jesus instead of being loyal to him. One of the 12 disciples named Judas who betrayed Jesus. Judas was a greedy person and he informed about Jesus to get 30 silver coins. The result of this information was that Jesus was arrested by his enemies and crucified, whereupon Jesus died. Verse

“Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.”  (Matthew 26:14-16)

Judas belonged to a region called Iscariot. Because of his connection with Iscariot, he is called Judas Iscariot. He initially lived like a common man and was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus. Judas’ Responsibility on Money Bag

Judas' Responsibility on Money Bag

Greed came to the heart of Judas in such a way that Jesus gave the responsibility of the treasury to one of his 12 disciples and that disciple was Judas. Judas guarded the treasury and whatever money was collected was given to him to manage. But Judas used to cheat out of it and kept some of the money. Jesus knew that Judas steals, but still Jesus did not say anything to him and left him in charge of the treasury. Because Jesus had a very soft heart and he was kind to everyone. Judas betrayed Jesus to get the 30 pieces of silver. This betrayal cost Jesus his life.

Verse

“He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.” (John 12:6)

Judas’ Plan

Judas’ Plan

The message of Christianity was spreading very fast. People were being influenced by the teachings of Jesus and were leaving Judaism and coming to Christianity. Because of this, the Jewish leaders were very worried. They thought that if Christianity spread in this way, the name and sign of Judaism will be erased. Judas took advantage of this situation, his heart was greedy and he wanted money. An idea came to his mind. He went to the Jewish leaders and said that I am a disciple of Jesus. I have a solution for your problem. If you pay me, I can identify Jesus and you can arrest him. The Jewish leaders made a deal with Judas. They promised Judas 30 pieces of silver in return for identifying Jesus and handing him over to the Jewish leaders. Judas made a plan and said that I will go with Jesus to a place where I will kiss Jesus and you will know that he is Jesus. At the decided time, Judas kissed Jesus, letting the Roman soldiers know that he was Jesus. They arrested Jesus and took him away.

Verse

Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money. He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.” (Luke 22:3-6)

Jesus Arresting

When Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, Judas brought the Roman soldiers and identified him with a kiss. After the identification, the Roman soldiers arrested Jesus and later crucified him. This kiss became a symbol of betrayal and it makes us understand that, it is not the distant enemies who are more dangerous, but those closest to themselves, if they turn traitor, they lead to death.

Verse

“While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.  (Matthew 26:47-49)

Regret of Judas

Regret of Judas

Judas was a greedy man. The love of the world came into his heart, but he did not hate Jesus. He also had love for Jesus in his heart, but the love of the world was greater than the love of Jesus. When Jesus was going to die on the cross, Judas realized his mistake, he thought that he had done something very wrong. He tried to redeem Jesus by returning the silver money, but then they did not listen to Judas. And put Jesus to death. Because of his sin, Judas was very ashamed and he committed suicide. This shows that man is a very weak creature. He can take such steps when he was tempted. But later only regrets remain.

Verse

When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.” “What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.” So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. (Matthew 27:3-5)
